What do you know about David Gleirscher? We are sure that you’ve heard about his surprising victory in 2018 PyeongChang. Though this Austrian luger still doesn’t have a great number of medals and trophies, he shows constant development and that’s why we’d like to tell you about his way to success.

Personal Information

David Gleirscher was born on July 23, 1994, in Hall in Tirol, Austria. He is the son of Gerhard Gleirscher, a luger, who won 3 World Championships medals and represented Austria at 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. David’ s brother, Nico, is also a luger.

David’s coaches are Rene Friedl at the national level and Thorsten Flath at the country level. Besides doing sports, the luger is also a police officer. His hobbies are football and travelling.

International Competitions

In 2013/14 season, David Gleirscher debuted at the World Cup and finished 64th overall. In 2014/15, he rose to the 12th place, finishing 15th in Innsbruck, 21st in Lake Placid and Park City, 5th in Calgary, 6th in Sigulda and 9th in Oberhof. And in a year, he finished on the 11th place.

In 2016/17 season, the luger was on 24th place, being on the 14th place in Lake Placid and Park City, 15th in Whistler, 30th in Sigulda, 10th in Oberhof. In 2017/18, he finished the season on the 12th place. The athlete was on the 25th place in Innsbruck, 4th in Winterberg, 7th in Altenberg, 21st in Calgary, 20th in Lake Placid, 9th in Berchtesgaden-Konigssee, 12th in Oberhof, 6th in Lillehammer and 12th in Sigulda.

In 2014/15 season, David took the 6th place at U-23 World Championships and finished 17th at the European Championships in men’s singles. In 2015/16 season, at 46th FIL World Championships, the athlete finished 9th in sprint and 7th in singles. However, he managed to win a silver medal at FIL World Championships U23 in men’s singles. At the European Championships, he took 24th place.

In 2016/17 season, Gleirscher finished 25th at U23 World Championships. At the World Championships, he took 49th place in singles and 12th place in sprint. At the European Championships in Sigulda in 2017/18 season, the luger reached Top 10 result, by finishing on the 10th place.

2018 Winter Olympics

2018 Winter Olympics were the first ones in Gleirscher’s career. However, it didn’t prevent the luger from winning gold in men’s singles and becoming the first Austrian to win men’s luge since 1968. David became a champion with the total time of 3:10.702. He finished Run 1 in 47.652, Run 2 in 47.835, Run 3 in 47.584 and Run 4 in 47.631.

Moreover, Gleirscher took part in team event. He became a bronze medalist along with his teammates Madeleine Egle, Peter Penz and Georg Fischler. At that race, the luger finished in 48.758.

So, we can clearly see the tendency that David Gleirscher shows better and better results. That’s why, we believe that soon, he will reach the World Cup podium and, probably, win more Olympic medals.
