Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo was born on October 22, 1996, in Trondheim, Norway. In childhood, he dreamt about becoming a football player, but his family influenced his choice of cross-country skiing. At the age of 2, the athlete’s grandfather presented him the first pair of skis and his path to the professional sports started.

Achievements at the International Level

In 2015, Klaebo took part in the Junior World Championships and became 2-time bronze medalist in individual sprint and relay. At 2016 Junior World Championships, the athlete improved his results significantly by claiming 3 gold medals in relay, individual sprint and 10 km classical.

The cross-country skier debuted at the senior level of the World Championships in 2017 and also managed to win a medal, bronze in individual sprint. He finished 15th in 15 km individual and 4th in team sprint. Besides, Johannes participated in the 2017 Scandinavian Cup. He won silver and bronze medals there.

Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo debuted at the World Cup in 2015/16 season, participating in the classic sprint in Drammen and finishing 15th. He reached his first podium in 2016/17 season by winning a bronze medal in classic sprint in Ruka. The same season, the athlete got his first victory, winning the sprint freestyle in Otepaa.

On March 2017, Klaebo gained his first small crystal globe in the Sprint World Cup in Quebec City. Also, he won the Helvetia U23 overall ranking after being the best in the end-of-season mini tour. In addition, he became a silver medalist of the Nordic Opening. During the season, he rose in the overall rating from 110 to 4th place.

2017/18 season was even more successful for Johannes. He managed to gain the overall World Cup title, winning also the titles in U23, sprint and Nordic Opening. By the way, he became the youngest winner of the overall title in cross-country skiing at the World Cup, being 21 years old. In total, for 3 seasons at the World Cup, the Norwegian won 14 races and rose to the podiums 21 times.

Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo complemented his achievements at the World Cup with an astonishing debut at 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. He claimed gold in sprint by finishing the race in 3:05.75. Together with his teammates, Didrik Toenseth, Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Simen Hegstad Krueger, he won the relay event. Moreover, Klaebo earned one more gold in team sprint in duo with Martin Johnsrud Sundby.
