Wimbledon 2018 Day 2: Wins of Nadal, Zverev, Del Potro, Kerber, Halep, Muguruza, Defeat of Kvitova, Thiem, Goffin
On the second day of the first round of Wimbledon 2018 in gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles, Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Juan Martin del Potro, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza gained victories while Petra Kvitova, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin were defeated.
Women’s #1, Simona Halep (Romania) defeated Kurumi Nara (Japan): 6-2, 6-4. The Roland-Garros champion needed to prove her excellence at the Centre Court in the match with the world’s #100 Nara. Though the match was rather tough, it was over in 78 minutes and Halep gained her first victory at 2018 Wimbledon. The Romanian tennis player, who played in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the last 2 years, continues the fight for the main prize. In the second round, she will play with Zheng Saisai (China).
Garbine Muguruza (Spain), seeded 3rd, gained a victory over Naomi Broady (UK): 6-2, 7-5.
Her compatriot Rafael Nadal, who is second-seed, won in the match with Dudi Sela (Israel): 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.
Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic), who was seeded 8th, lost to Alieksandra Sasnovich (Belarus) and didn’t proceed further: 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Alexander Zverev (Germany), who is 4th seed, gained a victory in a match with James Duckworth (Australia): 7-5, 6-2, 6-0.
Dominic Thiem (Austria), seeded 7th, lost to Marcos Baghdatis (Cyprus) and stopped to fight for the title: 6-4, 7-5, 2-0.
Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina), seeded 5th, won in the match with Peter Gojowczyk (Germany): 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Angelique Kerber (Germany), who is 11th seed, earned a victory over Vera Zvonareva (Russia): 7-5, 6-3.
David Goffin (Belgium), 10th seeded, was defeated by Matthew Ebden (Australia) and had to leave the competition: 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
