Matthias Mayer was born on June 9, 1990, in Afritz am See, Carinthia, Austria. His father is former alpine ski racer, Helmut Mayer, who is a silver medalist of the 1989 World Championships and 1988 Olympics Games.

Mayer made an international debut at 2008 FIS Junior World Ski Championships and earned a silver medal in Super-G. At the senior level, he competed at 2013, 2015 and 2017 World Championships. He didn’t win any medals. Matthias showed the best results in Super-G, being 5th in 2013 and 4th in 2015.

Competing at the European Cup, the skier managed to gain 2 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Matthias Mayer debuted at the World Cup in 2009 in Sestriere. In 2013 Kitzbuehel, he rose to his first podium, winning silver in Super G. In 2014 Kenzerheide, he gained his first World Cup victory in downhill. And in 2015 Saalbach, the athlete won his first Super-G event.

In total, Mayer won the World Cup events 5 times. He was on the podiums 14 more times, winning 8 silver and 6 bronze medals. In 2013 and 2015, he was a bronze medalist in Super-G.

Matthias competed at 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics and became a gold medalist at both of them. In 2014 Sochi, he claimed gold in downhill, finishing in 2:06.23. Also, he was 6th in giant slalom and 13th in combined.

In 2018 PyeongChang, the athlete gained a gold medal in Super-G, finishing in 1:24.44. In addition, he finished the downhill race on the 9th place.

The skier commented his victory in the following way: “Four years ago I won the downhill and now today I’m Olympic champion in super-G. I have no words for that. I was not sure thinking about my hip today. There was a point when I thought I might not be able to run the downhill and it’s still a bit blue but the medical guys have done a great job”.

Mayer’s father was a silver medalist in Super-G in 1988 and the athlete was happy to bring one more medal in this discipline to his family: “I’ve been looking at my dad’s silver medal in our living room all my life and I’m happy to have my own now”.

All in all, Matthias Mayer is one of the best Austrian skiers at the moment. What he like him for is that he always does his best in order to be a decent representative of his country.
