Samuel Girard is a real superstar in Canada. In 2018, he won the 1000 m event at Winter Olympics and became the first Canadian, who did that. Besides, the short track speed skater shows great results at other competitions.

Samuel Girard was born on June 26, 1996, in Ferland-et-Boilleau. Quebec, Canada. He started to skate at the age of 4. In addition to his numerous medals, the athlete was also awarded with the Speed Skating Canada’s Rising Star Award in 2014 and became short track’s 2017 Male Skater of the Year by Speed Skating Canada. Samuel Girard started his international career in 2013/14 season, participating in 2014 World Junior Championships, where she won a silver medal in 500 m and finished 4th overall.

In 2014/15, the athlete debuted at the World Cup. In his rookie season, he won silver and bronze medals in 5000 m relay. The following season, the athlete improved his results by getting gold in 500 m and 5000 m relay as well as silver in 5000 m relay, 1000 m, 2 bronze medals in 500 m and 2 medals in 5000 m relay. He also won an overall 500 m bronze medal.

In 2016/17 season, Samuel earned gold in 500 m, 1500 m as well as silver in 1000 m and 5000 m relay. In 2017/18 World Cup season, the short track speed skater was a gold medalist in 500 m and 2-time gold medalist in 5000 m relay. In addition, he won silver in 1000 m, bronze in 500 m, 1000 m and 5000 m relay.

Girard also participated in the World Championships. In 2016, he was a silver medalist in 1000 m and 5000 m relay. In 2017, he earned the overall bronze medal in addition to a silver one in 1500 m. In 2018, he won silver in 5000 m relay.

Samuel Girard made a successful Olympic debut at 2018 Winter Olympic in PyeongChang. He claimed gold in 1000 m, finishing in 1:24.650 and becoming the first Canadian to win that distance.

Being a part of the Canadian team, Girard became a bronze medalist in 5000 m relay together with Charles Hamelin, Charle Cournoyer and Pascal Dion. Also, the athlete finished 4th in the finals of 500 m and 1500 m events.
