The Main Achievements of Andreas Wellinger

German ski jumper Andreas Wellinger showed astonishing results at 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang by winning medals in all events he competed in. However, the athlete won much more titles and today, we are going to tell about his most important achievements.

Andreas Wellinger was born on August 28, 1995, in Ruhpolding, Germany. At the junior level, Wellinger won a bronze medal at 2013 FIS Junior World Ski Championships and improved his result in 2015 by winning 2 silver medals. He won a gold medal in team event at 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games.

Also, the ski jumper is a gold medalist of 2011 Alpen Cup, 2013, 2015 and 2016 Grand Prix, 2012 Continental Cup and is a silver medalist of 2016 Ski Flying World Championships.

World Championships

Wellinger debuted at the World Championships in 2015, but didn’t won any medals. At 2017 World Ski Championships, he earned 3 medals. He became a gold medalist in mixed normal hill and silver medalist in normal and large hill.

World Cup

Andreas Wellinger competes at the World Cup since 2012. He debuted at the events in Lillehammer, where he finished 5th. The same season, he gained his first World Cup gold in large hill team event in Kuusamo. In addition, that season, the athlete won bronze in Sochi and silver in Engelberg. He finished the season 20th overall.

In 2013/14 season, the athlete rose to the 9th overall position after winning individual gold in large hill in Wisla and 2 silver medals in Klingenthal and Engelberg. He also rose to the podiums in team events, gaining 3 silver medals in Klingenthal, Zakopane and Lahti.

The 2014/15 season was the worst in the World Cup career of Wellinger. He won a bronze medal in large hill and claimed gold in team event in Klingenthal. He finished the season on the 35th place. In 2015/16 season, the ski jumper rose to the 17th place after winning team events in Klingenthal and Willingen and gaining team silver in Kuopio.

2016/17 season was more successful for the German athlete. He claimed individual gold medals in Willingen and Oslo as well as gained silver in Zakopane, Oberstdorf, Sapporo, PyeongChang, Oslo, Vikersund and Planica, and bronze in Wisla, PyeongChang, Trondheim and Vikersund. In team events, he won gold in Zakopane, silver in Klingenthal, Oslo, Planica and bronze in Willingen. He finished the season 4th overall.

In 2017 season, Andreas Wellinger has already earned 7 individual and 4 team medals. In individual events, he won gold in Nizhny Tagil, silver in Titisee-Neustadt, Zakopane and bronze in Kuusamo/Ruka, Innsbruck, Bischofshofen, Oslo. In team events, he got a gold medal in Lahti, silver medals in Kuusamo/Ruka and Zakopane, a bronze medal in Titisee-Neustadt.

2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics

Andreas made an Olympic debut at 2014 Sochi. Though he gained no individual medals, finishing 6th in normal hill and 45th in large hill, he became a gold medalist in team event.

At 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, the ski jumper was much more successful and got 3 medals. He claimed gold in normal hill and won 2 silver medals in large hill and team event.

In a nutshell, the career of Andreas Wellinger is full of ups and downs. However, the athlete continues to develop and do his best to show better results. And it's most likely that soon, the overall World Cup title will be won.
