Kjeld Nuis and His Major Speed Skating Achievements

Kjeld Nuis showed incredible results at 2018 Winter Olympics by claiming 2 gold medals. However, his success wasn’t just a matter of case. The athlete worked hard in order to become an Olympic champion.

Kjeld Nuis was born on November 10, 1989, in Leiden, Netherlands. He began skating at the age of 7. He started to compete at the national and international level in 2009/10 season. But let’s consider his achievements in more detail.

National Competitions

Nuis debuted at the Dutch national championships in 2009/10 season. He didn’t win any medals, being 5th at the Dutch Sprint as well as finishing 6th in 1500m, 11th in 1000m and 16th in 500m at the Dutch Single Distance Championships.

In 2011/12 season, the athlete reached his first Dutch podium, winning silver in 1500m and bronze in 1000m. In a year, Kjeld became the Dutch champion in 1000m and 1500m. In 2013/14, the speed skater defended his title in 1000m, but earned a silver medal in 1500m. That year, he won a bronze medal in sprint. 

In 2014/15, he claimed gold in 1000m again, being 4th in 1500m. In 2015/16 season, Kjeld Nuis became the Dutch champion in 1000m and 1500m again. However, the following year, he was second in both disciplines. In 2017/18 season, he was a silver medalist in 1000m.

Nuis made an international debut at the 2009/10 World Cup. His best result was the 10th place in 1500m. In 2010/11 season, the athlete debuted at the World Sprint Championships, where he finished 5th, and at the World Single Distance Championships, where he won a silver medal in 1000m.

In 2011/12 season, Kjeld was also a silver medalist in 1000m at the World Single Distance Championships. Moreover, he gained his first World Cup medals, silver in 1500m and bronze in 1000m. In 2012/13, the speed skater claimed gold in 1000m at the World Cup, but the following year, he was a bronze medalist in the same discipline.

In 2014/15 season, Nuis was a bronze medalist of the World Single Distance Championships in 1000m as well as silver medalist in 1000m and bronze medalist in 1500m at the World Cup. Among the athlete’s trophies of 2015/16 season were silver in World Sprint, silver in 1500m and bronze in 1000m of the World Single Distance Championships, gold in 1000m and silver in 1500m of the World Cup in addition to the gold medal at the Grand World Cup.

In 2016/17 season, the Dutch speed skater was extremely successful at the World Cup, winning 1000m, 1500m and the Grand World Cup. He also was a gold medalist in 1000m and 1500m at the World Single Distance Championships as well as a bronze medalist of the World Sprint. In 2017/18 season, Nuis won a bronze medal at the World Sprint.

Though 2018 Winter Olympics were the first ones for Kjeld Nuis, he showed fantastic results by claiming 2 gold medals in 1000m and 1500m. He finished the 1500m race in 1:44.01 and the 1000m one in 1:07.95.

Undoubtedly, Kjeld Nuis made a great progress in the recent years. Though he didn’t won any competitions at the start of his career, he managed to win almost all prestigious awards, including 2018 Winter Olympics.
