David Américo Ortiz Arias (born November 18, 1975), nicknamed "Big Papi", is a Dominican American professional baseball player who plays for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). Ortiz is a designated hitter (DH) who occasionally plays first base. He previously played for the Minnesota Twins from 1997–2002.
Ortiz is a ten-time All-Star, a three-time World Series champion, and holder of the Red Sox single-season record for home runs with 54, set during the 2006 season.
Ortiz has hit 539 career home runs, which ranks 17th on the MLB all-time home run list. He is the all-time leader in MLB history for home runs (483), runs batted in (RBIs) (1,564), and hits (2,183) by a DH.
